Day 19 – Where have the last four days gone?

While I have been posting something this week, I have neglected my little diary sort of thing.

This week has been busy at work and I’ve still been fighting off this bug, which seems to combining with hayfever to cause all sorts of havoc. But still, plodding along.

I have managed to post up one lot of Tips & Tricks and one short story so far, now I just have to work out how to format things properly and I can start adding some more of both – I really wish there were more formatting options (does anyone know if there are somewhere).

Work will still be busy this coming week, as deadlines are approaching, but I will try to get something up once a day.

Needless to say, Camp NaNo is not going all that well, but I’m still plotting Unvamped 2* here and there, so there is still writing work being done. I will have to push a bit harder through next Camp Nano – July 2015 – and try to make up for it. I think my focus at the moment needs to be Unvamped 2* since all my thoughts and ideas are surrounding that, it seems silly to press a story when another one is bombarding my brain. But, I did have a great idea for something to do with Soul Wars* the other day, so obviously Unvamped 2* isn’t entirely taking over inside my head, which is nice to know given I’m trying to get into short stories now too. There are still 11 days left of Camp Nano though, so I haven’t given up hope I will reach 25,000 words. It just might not be the story I had intended to write. I only have just over 2,000 words per day to finish on time, so that’s manageable.

I suppose I will get onto that as soon as I’ve eaten! Am starving!

Day 14 – short stories on the brain

Today has been another refresher day which I sorely needed. I have had no work and no study to do so I slept in and had a bath. The cold is finally getting better…I think…

Short stories are on my mind at the moment. I feel a bit like I’m ready to try them again – I have, in the past, been terrible at them! “A 2,000-5,000 word story? I can do that!” 30,000 or more words later…oops… :\

So, I thought a good start might be to put some of my writing on here and I’ve started up an account on Wattpad as well so I will make some use of that with new stories I write as well as submitting some to competitions and magazines. My mum bought me a diary/journal where you have a question or writing prompt each day, so I’m going to start there and see if I can at least start off with Flash Fiction!

I have realised that this blog is indeed more than just finding my way to a completed Soul Wars* but its a journey for finding my writerly self and for discovering any story that I have in my head – there are a lot clamouring around in there and it would be good to get tgem out if only for a bit of peace and quiet. But, also, I’d like to share some of what I’ve learnt through my Bachelor, my Masters, courses taken at the SA Writers’ Centre, and extensive reading. So, tomorrow I’m planning to put up some Tips & Tricks on plotting that I’ve collected over the years, including a few bits that I’ve found for myself over the years.

Plotting for Unvamped 2* is also still going along nicely. Sometimes I get in the groove and feel I can just wing it, but sometimes I feel like I can’t move forward with my ideas until I do some more research. Its a very different process to Unvamped where it really all just flowed. But, that’s writing for you.

Day 12 – where Soul Wars* seems to have taken a temporary backseat and Unvamped 2* is on a veritable rampage

It is really hard to do course assignments when the writing bug has hit…

That is in no way to say that I have done any actual writing today, but I’m in the mood and inspired and its all my brain can think about. I have been doing some more research on Druids for Unvamped 2* – starting with the very important Druids: A Very Short Introduction by Barry Cunliffe – and am more convinced than ever that there is no real historical basis for the kinds of druids I thought there were (based on Merlin/Arthurian mythology) or that I need for my story. My only dilemma now is that I’m not sure whether I should concoct a bastardised version of Druidry that sits similar to what I believed Druids to be, or to come up with a “new” branch of magic. I feel that maybe a bastardised version of Druidry might be the best way to go, but I don’t want it to seem to unrealistic if there are readers who know more about Druids than I can teach myself. I just have to hope that I can weave a story exciting and in-depth enough that my readers can suspend their disbelief long enough to get through it! 🙂

I have been busy plotting as well, and that is going well. Although, as the plot arc table nears completion, it gets scarier because then I have no excuses not to keep writing the story. But, we shall come to that hurdle when we come to it.

I have also been looking further into buying the font from the Unvamped cover, and have found a couple of places from which to buy it, but will need the tech-savvy husband or brother-in-law to check I’m not buying from somewhere dodgy. On the plus-side, only have to buy one because I found the other one on a free font site 🙂

While I’m on a roll, I should get back to plotting – plus need to leave for dinner at the in-laws soon!

Day 10

Well, illness has struck me down today *rabble rabble* but I felt I needed to stick to posting every day – one lapse and I know I’ll not post for ages!

The idea to incorporate into Unvamped 2* led me to get a massive amount of plotting done on that novel. My short list of reference books yesterday has made me decide to make a page of my reference books in case people are interested, so work is going along smoothly on that – I just have to find them all! No doubt it will continue to be a work in progress as I keep buying new ones 🙂 – my wish list on Amazon is ridiculously long!

Speaking of Unvamped 2* and reference books, all my plotting has reminded me that I need to get more books on Druids/Druidry as it will play a part in the plot – at present anyway, my preliminary research has led me to believe that Druidry may be too passive for what I need so I may need to bastardise it a little or come up with a “new” form of magic based on druidry. We’ll see how it goes! My reference books on mythical creatures will come in very handy for this story as well as I take my characters to a supernatual university!

I have got a lot of reading done today, which is good. But, when the kindle still says 16% after a good two to three hours of reading, you know you’re in for a good ride!

Dinner time now, or at least checking with the husband on the status of dinner… 🙂

Day 9 – an ode to reference books

Not a lot of writing done since my last post, I was unfortunately busy working – dang living requiring money. I have started reading Laini Taylor’s Dreams of Gods and Monsters, reading more Heart and Brain (Heart is just awesome and all The Awkward Yeti’s comics are relatable!) and been thinking about reference books a lot.

I love reference books, even if they’re not specifically helpful to my current topic – stuff is just interesting, that’s just how it is. I have books on:

  • Medieval Castles – complete with floor plans, floor plans are very important
  • the craft of writing (just so many!) – you can never stop learning to better yourself!
  • poisons – makes my husband very nervous, but it’s great for killing characters off in creative ways!
  • religions – from all over the world, throughout history!
  • witchcraft/wicca/druidry – because why not?
  • baby names – dictionaries plus apps, for when inspiration needs a jolt!
  • all my school and university subjects – history (modern and ancient, and especially medieval) features prominantly.
  • and so many others, I just can’t keep track.

I have reference books to thank for realising my dream of becoming a published author – it was while reading Steven Harper’s Writing the Paranormal Novel that I came up with the idea for Unvamped. Harper suggests to think outside the box when it comes to plotting, think of something that’s different. And, I suddenly thought “What if, instead of human turns vampire and off we go…what if, vampire turns human and off we go?!” I was pretty certain it was a novel idea (pardon the pun) – not to say it had never been done before, but I was pretty sure it wasn’t mainstream. And, thus Unvamped was born. Actually…that gives me an idea for the middle of Unvamped 2*! This seems to be a pattern with me of late – I come up with a good starting idea, find the ending, but the middle remains murky for much too long!

Either way! Must go and make notes before I forget my potentially genius idea!
